Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for theater and art in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at the college. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
